The Theory of Everything: Humpty Dumpty Sat on a Wall

In the beginning, God said, “Let there be light.” Hence, the Big Bang and the theory of expansion and we have been expanding ever since time began. Well, for some of us, that means literally expanding into a Humpty Dumpty.  Consider this: If the visible cosmos is still in expansion mode and moving away from the center of where the Big Bang occurred into a vacuum, then what is there to maintain the vacuum? The laws of physics that are universal in nature cannot create a vacuum without a container. So, whose fish bowl are we in, yours or mine? Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall; Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. Just a thought.

Close Encounters: The Ghostly Kind

They say animals can sense and see more than we can. There was definitely something strange going on in our home back then. Our cat never liked to stay in the house alone. Our home back in the summer of 1964 was the top floor of a two-family house in Clifton, New Jersey, USA. I believe the house was over one hundred years old of wood construction that had a basement we shared with the family downstairs.

Our bedroom, that is my brother Ben and I shared the attic via the staircase leading off the bathroom, it was the only way up to the attic, and you had to go through the bathroom to get there and vice versa. Ben and I were very young, Ben was nearly two years younger than me and I was about seven years old at the time, so our mum often made us share a bath together.

One day, while having a bath together we heard the sound of footsteps, as if someone was coming down the wooden staircase from the attic. At first, we were not scared, because we thought perhaps it was our father or mother coming down the stairs from the attic. I guess I was more aware of what was happening than my brother was as he was younger than me. The sound of someone or something coming up or down the staircase from the attic was a common occurrence throughout the following five years we lived there. Both Mum and Dad would often hear the same sound when they were in the bathroom. And Ben and I often heard the same sound of footsteps as we lay in bed in the attic.

After a while we became used to the weird sound of footsteps on the wooden staircase, although as children it would scare us sometimes, especially at night, then we had to sleep with the light on.

Now, our muggy cat called Suki never liked the house. Suki would often dive under the sofa and hiss and scowl at something that we could not see, but the cat could. Suki’s behavior at these times was unusual because normally she was the type of cat that liked to be handled and stroked.

My dad found out several years later there had been a horrific murder at the house; apparently a man had repeatedly stabbed his wife to death. We were the last occupants of the house, as the house and a few more along the street were sold to the local Bell Company to make way for a car park. But, I shall never forget 42 Barkley Avenue. Boo!

“It cost billions to construct, yet it only took a few seconds for disaster to strike.” From Russia with Love

Anyway, I have a story to tell so pull up a chair you coffee junkies, milkshake hussies, and tele-tubbies. It began when I was in the warren of rooms in the University of Sunderland’s library researching the dissertation for my master’s in artificial intelligence. It was like a subterranean cave in some ways, but the walls were lined with books to the low ceiling with racks upon racks of more books that formed a labyrinth of passageways.

I was immersed in my quest to find information to support my thesis, I would often spend my day making notes and reading as much as I could in the little time that I had. But, I enjoyed what I was doing; it became my second home where I was surrounded with a wealth of knowledge at my fingertips. I would often fray off the proverbial leading down a path that I did not need to go, but I could not help myself, sometimes the stories I read were just too fascinating to discard. I felt like an investigative reporter finding a story for the first time and all I could do was keep chasing the story, I was hooked as a junkie is to heroin. There appeared to be a common denominator in what I was reading, but it was not directly related to the research I was undertaking, and, yet it plays a role in all our lives whether we like it or not.

The American soldiers who lost their lives operating the Patriot missile system defending Israel from SAM rockets being launched by Iraqi forces are one example of a misunderstanding of procedures and receiving inadequate training in the defense system. The astronauts who lost their lives in that NASA Challenger Space Shuttle mission because critical advice was disregarded are another. The Arianne 5 rocket launch in 1996 turned into a disaster costing seven billion dollars because of a simple memory storage oversight by engineers. The innovative Iridium satellite phone company that went bust costing billions of dollars for the original investors is another example of ignoring the mathematical limitations of the system in a real-world scenario.  Of course, there are still many more examples that perhaps can be avoided. If we understood that the principal mistake as human beings is, we make assumptions and that is our failure because invariably we are wrong.

Title: (There Was No Monkey Bite) When Two Tribes Go to War: Part Three

Title: (There Was No Monkey Bite) When Two Tribes Go to War

Part Three

The day President Reagan was shot the world was plunged into uncertainty. Joe and Issy were glued to the TV patiently waiting for news of the shooting.

“Maybe it’s a good thing… if he dies. I don’t mean it like that, but he was sounding like he was ready to go to war with Russia. I don’t wish him dead.”

But, part of him did wish him dead. He saw the expression of shock and disbelief on Issy’s face as he said what he felt. The stress of living in constant fear was taking its toll, it was making Joe sound just as mad as they were.

“You don’t mean it, Joe? Do you…,” Issy asked.

“Stress and fear can make you say stuff Issy…when you really don’t mean it,” he replied.

It can also make you do things totally out of character. Joe remembered, reading about how soldiers under extreme stress can go crazy and become a killing machine. They become addicted to killing, as a junkie is to heroin. It’s not just pulling that trigger. There is that trigger point in all of us that can send you over the edge. And when that happens there is no going back. He was at that edge, a tipping point.

“What are you thinking?” Issy asked.

“Listen…I hope it’s not another conspiracy like the Kennedy assassination. They reckon the Russians were behind that one,” he snapped.

Joe and Issy sat there, their eyes glued to the TV waiting for news about the shooting; it was a day that they would never forget.

You remember what and where you were, the day you hear a president has been shot, and everybody says that, Joe was thinking while listening to the TV news.

“President Reagan has been shot and is in a critical condition… he was shot by a lone gunman while attending…,” the TV commentator announced.

“Doesn’t sound good, for Reagan,” Issy said crying.

“Oh, it’s a terrible shame. There are some mad people in this world. What do you think, Joe?”

“It only takes one.”

“We’ll have to see, what happens…maybe he’ll make it, Issy. Who knows?”  Joe said without conviction.

The TV news broadcasts were sketchy in detail, but they did not look good. Reagan was an old man. Would he survive? Joe was thinking and I guess Issy was thinking the same, and most likely the rest of the world was thinking the same. Anyone that is shot is not going to be up for much. A few millimeters here or there, and it could mean life or death.

President Reagan did survive, and as the decade progressed the newspaper headlines were about major unrest and violence in the Middle East, the Iran-Iraq war, the Soviet-Afghan war, the 1982 Lebanon war, and the bombing of Libya in 1986 in response to the terrorist attack on Pan Am 103.

The tension eased somewhat when Mr Gorbachev came to power he appeared decent, intelligent, and sane compared to Reagan. It came to be called the late 1980s ‘purple passage’ of the autumn of nations. In the end, there was no monkey bite, as Joe had feared. He remembered, reading how a monkey bite had started a world war.

By the end of the decade, with the break-up of the Warsaw Pact, the Soviet Union declared an end to political hostility and the Cold War.

*
It’s now 2011, forget about what they say about the 1980s as if all we cared about was ‘loads of money’, the latest haircut, and who was wearing what. It was a decade of fear brought about by the rhetoric of Margaret Thatcher and her alter ego Ronald Reagan, who were warmongers, who scared the shit out of millions of people.

I was 10 as the 80s ended, and my dad told me what he remembered about the first part of the decade, as a mix of riots, unemployment, AIDS, war, and nuclear paranoia. Anyone, who tries to tell you that they spent the decade with an asymmetric haircut, wearing legwarmers, and doing the Rubik's cube is lying, my hair was always plain and simple and while Thatcher did her thing, I did mine. I still have a nagging resentment about the Thatcher legacy though, but it is hard to imagine going back to just British Telecom and our big red brick phone again.

Oh, by the way, my name is Fran, the daughter of Issy and Joe.

Part Two

This is the news at ten...,” the TV news commentator announced.

“...today, the government announced what the public should do in case of a nuclear attack...,” the TV announcer said.

The three-minute warning was a newsflash Joe and Issy would hear countless times, and they both knew if that would be any good.

“What does it mean, Joe?”

They both looked at each other, but nothing was said, but, the expression on their faces was sheer disbelief. They were both physically and mentally worn out. The constant fear of nuclear war had taken its toll. Years later, ironically, my friend told me his mum would not let him stay up late to watch the special screening of the video "Two Tribes" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood as she thought it would scare him, as he was only ten at the time.

Over the years that followed, what seemed like a lifetime, they lived in constant fear. The same story, told every day in the news media, about the threat of nuclear Armageddon. President Reagan, who everyone thought was likely to push the button at any time soon, was acting tough with the Russians. It was the early 1980s, and England was in the grip of the threat from the East. The Cold War was at a tipping point. The coverage of anti-nuclear demonstrations was a daily event. Protesters against nuclear installations up and down the country were on the march, camping and laying siege to American and British military bases. Left-wing politicians had joined their ranks. Ordinary people everywhere were being arrested for voicing their views against the government’s nuclear deterrent, the Trident nuclear missile program.

“I don’t know, but if the government wanted to scare us…there doing a damn good job,” Joe said calmly.

Issy and Joe were worried though; their minds were confused, after being bombarded night and day with stories about the imminent threat of nuclear war. They were young adults, with a child on the way. They wanted a life for their unborn child, they did not worry about their own lives, and it was the life that they wanted to bring into the world they both often cried about. The fear was real, the fear the world would soon end in nuclear war, and in Britain, everyone felt close to the frontline, it’s a small island and the fallout would affect everyone.

The government was sending out leaflets about what to do in case of a nuclear attack, but little else. Leaflets would pop through the letterbox every other week explaining what you could do in the event of a nuclear alert. TV programs started to appear showing the effects of a nuclear strike and what areas and cities would be likely targets.

Issy and Joe even considered how close they were to any military bases as they were only about 50 miles from a nuclear power station, and that would probably be a target, they thought.

And the government, well, their advice was to find a table and sit under it and hope for the best, and of course, have some tinned food and water stocked up.

The government had not considered building any purpose-built shelters for the population; their response was to advise us to stick our heads between our knees and hope for the best, and that probably meant fuck you, Joe and Issy thought.

The following days and weeks they spent wondering what was to come. Issy and Joe would talk about what they could do. They had to do something. They started to stock up on tin food and water. At least enough to last a few days, Joe felt they needed to, until and if they survived.

“…today we reveal what some people are doing in case of a nuclear attack…,” the regional TV news commentator said.

Joe and Issy just sat there listening to the news broadcast – it told how some people had built their own nuclear shelters in their gardens. All you needed was around £1500 and some hard work digging the hole for the shelter.

“Can we afford this, Joe?”

“I don’t know Issy, but even if we could, is it going to be a world…we would want to live in?”

‘I can’t understand why the government isn’t doing enough…maybe they know more than their saying?’ Joe said.

The rhetoric was as bad as a clapped-out B actor's film script, true to form. The Soviets were led to believe that the US was planning a preemptive strike.

“I guess they think, we’re all sheep,” Joe said. Ronald McDonald would have been a more credible choice as President as far as the Brits were concerned, he mused.

“What does all this mean?” Issy spurted out the words with tears in her eyes hoping Joe could say something to comfort her.

“How the hell do I fuckin know…,” Joe replied anxiously.

“Whatever happens I hope we’re together if it happens.”

President Reagan's decision to station intermediate-range nuclear missiles in Western Europe would provoke mass protests involving more than one million people, but it did not seem to matter to the politicians.

Joe was becoming more radical every day that passed. He spent hours working out in his mind, how; they would cope in the event of nuclear war. He felt ready and willing to kill to survive. The opportunity just seemed just around the corner, it could be only weeks, months, and perhaps only a year before someone pushed the button.

As I Walked the Golden Path: Who Am I?

Who am I?
We are all teachers.
Do not let anybody tell you differently.
Here am I thinking to myself: who am I?
Trying to express myself by writing words on paper, without crying out,
Trying to express myself with light and clarity,
Without judgment or lies, who am I?
Learn to live with pain or gain.
When asked who am I, in time or judgment day?
We are all teachers.
Do not let anybody tell you differently.
Thoughts with deeds that count exist and say, who am I?
Not more or less, but what I did.
And how it changed the world I met.
When I am gone, the love I left behind was who I am.
